The largest of New York City, Queens borough is a patchwork of dozens of unique neighborhoods and home to many cultural institutions . The diversity is wonderfully impenetrable; 138 languages are spoken here. It was an important center of jazz in the 1940s, laying refuge for jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in the borough’s mixed communities. Queens also became a significant incubator for hip-hop artists including A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, and 50 Cent. In the neighborhood they were born and raised, Hollis Queens, Run DMC became the first group to have a city street renamed in their honor.
